Portas do Mar, Lajes do Pico and Horta

The four operators here sail from three islands. In Ponta Delgada on São Miguel, Futurismo checks guests in at Portas do Mar, Shop 26, and the listed time is check-in, with departure within 30 minutes. Picos de Aventura sails from the city's Marina Pêro de Teive. On Pico, Espaço Talassa boards at Lajes do Pico harbor, and in Horta on Faial, Peter Café Sport briefs passengers at its Base Peter Zee.

Espaço Talassa says its observation areas average about 10 minutes from Lajes harbor, against about 30 minutes from Horta, Madalena or Ponta Delgada. Futurismo says its half-day trip can run past 3 hours when the boat has to go farther offshore. Licensed boats are size-capped by zone: up to 14 m around Faial, Pico and São Jorge, and up to 20 m around São Miguel, according to the regional government.

Every licensed crew must include a lookout to find the animals, under the regional licensing rules. Espaço Talassa directs its boats from the Vigia da Queimada clifftop lookout, where at least two spotters guide up to four boats and make sure none gets too close. Picos de Aventura uses lookouts along São Miguel's south coast. On São Jorge, the restored Vigia da Baleia at Ponta dos Rosais, built around 1957, was the last working vigia of the Faial, Pico and São Jorge triangle, in use until the 1980s.

Blue whales in March, sperm whales in July

Sperm whales are the constant. Futurismo says it sees them all year. Espaço Talassa says they live around Pico and appear on 7 in 10 of its trips, and on 85 to 90 percent in July and August. The IWC handbook lists them year-round and more abundant in summer, with bottlenose, common, spotted and Risso's dolphins also present all year.

Spring is baleen whale season. Espaço Talassa recorded blue whales on 69 percent of its March trips and 48 percent in April, alongside fin and humpback whales, and common dolphins on almost 9 in 10 April trips. The IWC handbook gives April to June for fin, blue and sei whales and calls humpbacks and minkes occasional.

Summer is the best season for dolphins, according to the IWC handbook. Espaço Talassa says Atlantic spotted dolphins arrive around June. In July and August they show up on 8 in 10 of its trips, with pilot whales on more than half and the best odds of beaked whales. September and October bring fewer boats, sightings on every trip and the best chance of Bryde's whales, by its count.

Windguru, splashy Zodiacs and the catamaran option

Espaço Talassa makes its go or no-go call on the day, using the Windguru forecast and what its skippers see at sea, and offers a refund or another date if it cancels. It says morning and afternoon trips are no different, and it sails from mid-March to the end of October, sea permitting. Futurismo likewise cancels unsafe trips and suggests another date.

Futurismo calls its Zodiacs a fast, splashy ride and recommends its catamarans, which are more stable and have a toilet, for babies, children and anyone with reduced mobility. It sells no seasickness medication and advises buying it before the trip. Espaço Talassa runs only Zodiacs and does not take pregnant women, people with back or heart problems, or anyone who has had surgery in the past 6 months. Its waterproof jacket is included, but waterproof pants must be bought at its base.

Zodiacs at Lajes, catamarans at Ponta Delgada

Every whale watching company here needs a regional license, and the Azores government's tourism site lists the licensed operators island by island. Licensed crews must include a marine biology or animal behavior professional, a guide and a lookout. Licenses last five years and renew yearly, and Ordinance 45/2025 increased the number available everywhere except São Miguel.

On Pico, Espaço Talassa has run trips from Lajes since 1989 and charges from EUR 55 for about 3 hours on semi-rigid Zodiacs for 12 or 24, at 9 am and 2 pm. It says fewer than 1 percent of trips miss cetaceans, takes no children under 5 and offers private charters for 12. In Horta, Peter Café Sport prices by group size, from EUR 80 per adult for 1 to 3 people down to EUR 70 for 10 or more. It sails the 45-seat José Azevedo or the 16-seat Baleias Expresso, and books by request form.

In Ponta Delgada, Futurismo charges EUR 70 plus a EUR 4.20 online fee and halves the fare for ages 6 to 12. Under-6s ride free on the catamaran, and its Zodiacs take ages 6 and up. If no cetaceans are seen, guests join another tour free. Picos de Aventura charges EUR 74.90 on its catamaran, with skippers and biologists aboard, and EUR 37.45 for ages 6 to 11. Futurismo also sails from Lajes do Pico and Rabo de Peixe, from EUR 70.

Before you book

  • At Futurismo the listed tour time is check-in at Portas do Mar, Shop 26; the boat leaves within 30 minutes.
  • Bring water and snacks, since Futurismo sells no food on board, and buy seasickness tablets before the trip.
  • Espaço Talassa includes a waterproof jacket but not waterproof pants, which it sells at its base in Lajes.
  • Check the Azores government's island-by-island list of licensed whale watching operators before booking.
  • Getting there. Ponta Delgada's João Paulo II Airport on São Miguel is about 2 km (1.2 mi) west of the city center and has scheduled SATA Air Açores flights to all the other islands, according to Wikipedia.
