Buccaneer Drive marinas and the Platypus Bay run

Whale cruises leave from the marinas along Buccaneer Drive at Urangan Harbour. Spirit of Hervey Bay boards at Whale Bay Marina 15 minutes before departure, with free parking and transfers from accommodation. Tasman Venture and Blue Dolphin Marine Tours use the Great Sandy Straits Marina, Blue Dolphin from berth B5. Boat Club Adventure Cruises checks passengers in at the Hervey Bay Boat Club 30 minutes before sailing.

The whales rest in Platypus Bay, north of the city and sheltered by K'gari, and Spirit of Hervey Bay puts the run out at 30 to 45 minutes. Half-day cruises with Spirit, Tasman Venture and Boat Club sail at 8:30 am and 1:30 pm and last about 4 hours. Blue Dolphin's full-day sail leaves at 7:30 am and returns around 3:30 pm.

Resting humpbacks, newborn calves and the September peak

Humpbacks stop in Hervey Bay to rest on the way back to their Antarctic feeding grounds, and mothers nurse their calves in Platypus Bay. The Visit Fraser Coast season is July to October, and Spirit of Hervey Bay cruises for whales between 12 July and 31 October. Spirit says July is quieter and the first newborns appear in August, and it calls September the best month, when mothers and calves fill the bay.

Calves are born in tropical north Queensland at about 5 m and 2 tonnes, and practise breaching, spy-hopping and tail slapping while their mothers rest. Curious whales sometimes approach a boat and linger, which Spirit of Hervey Bay calls mugging. Hervey Bay became the world's first Whale Heritage Site in October 2019, covering about 6,000 km² of the Great Sandy Marine Park from Rooneys Point to Burrum Heads and south to Big Woody Island.

Sheltered water behind K'gari and July fleeces

K'gari shelters the bay from the open ocean, and Spirit of Hervey Bay says seasickness is rare on its stable catamaran. Blue Dolphin Marine Tours says it does not take guests into open ocean, though motion sickness can still happen in some conditions. Spirit suggests tablets 30 to 60 minutes before boarding, a seat mid-boat on a lower deck, a light meal, fresh air and ginger lollies.

For July and August, Spirit of Hervey Bay suggests a fleece, long pants, a light waterproof jacket and non-slip shoes. In September and October a light jacket with pants or shorts is enough, and October is warmer. Bring a hat with a strap, sunglasses, SPF 50+ sunscreen and a water bottle in any month. Boat Club Adventure Cruises says it cancels cruises only for strong winds.

Amaroo, Tasman Venture, Spirit and a sailing catamaran

Boat Club Adventure Cruises has the lowest published fare, AUD 110 per adult, on Amaroo, a purpose-built 20 m catamaran with three viewing decks and a hydrophone. Its return-ticket guarantee applies only between 23 July and 7 October. Tasman Venture charges AUD 155 (children AUD 75, family AUD 415), caps whale-season trips at about 85 passengers, carries a naturalist guide and gives an open-dated return ticket when a trip finds no whales.

Spirit of Hervey Bay also lists AUD 155 per adult, AUD 75 per child and AUD 435 for a family. Its catamaran, which it calls the largest vessel in Hervey Bay, has underwater viewing rooms, a hydrophone and air-conditioned cabins. It refunds whale cruise cancellations in full, asking for 24 hours' notice, and gives a free return cruise if no whales turn up. It says it has not failed to find whales in more than 30 years.

Blue Dolphin Marine Tours spends a full day under sail on an eco-certified catamaran for at most 24 guests, with morning tea, a buffet lunch and afternoon tea. It costs AUD 210 per adult and AUD 170 for children 8 to 14, suits children 8 and over, and gives no sighting guarantee. Skipper Peter Lynch has more than 40 years with marine mammals, according to the operator, which says it does not approach whales within 100 m. Tasman Venture and Blue Dolphin both take private charters, priced on request.

Before you book

  • Spirit of Hervey Bay suggests seasickness tablets 30 to 60 minutes before boarding and a seat mid-boat on a lower deck.
  • Pack a fleece, long pants and a light waterproof for July and August trips, and a hat with a strap and SPF 50+ sunscreen in any month.
  • Boat Club Adventure Cruises checks in 30 minutes and boards 15 minutes before departure, and children under 7 need a suitable child restraint to ride its courtesy bus.
  • Getting there. Hervey Bay is about 290 km north of Brisbane, roughly 3.5 hours' drive on the Bruce Highway. Hervey Bay Airport has direct flights from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, and the Tilt Train stops at Maryborough West, near Maryborough, about 30 minutes' drive away.
