Campbell Street offices and the Clayoquot Sound run

Campbell Street is where all three Tofino operators keep their offices. The Whale Centre, at 411 Campbell Street, asks guests to arrive 30 minutes early to be outfitted, sign a waiver and hear a safety briefing, then walks them about a minute to its dock. Jamie's Whaling Station lists 606 Campbell St, and Tofino Resort + Marina lists 634 Campbell Street, though neither page names the dock. Tofino Resort + Marina sails at 10:30 am, 1:30 pm and 4:30 pm from March to October.

Trips work the waters of Clayoquot Sound and the open Pacific beyond it. Tofino Resort + Marina names feeding grounds near Flores and Vargas islands and off Long Beach. Jamie's also runs tours from Ucluelet, and its raincheck tickets work from either town for the same tour type. Tofino sits at the tip of the Esowista Peninsula, on the southern edge of Clayoquot Sound.

Spring gray whales and the summer feeding group

Gray whales migrate 15,000 to 20,000 km a year between breeding grounds in Mexico and feeding grounds in Alaska. Parks Canada describes Vancouver Island's west coast as a rest stop on the way. The Whale Centre says the spring run from March to May brings thousands of them past Tofino, and Jamie's says the first arrive in February. About 240 stay through the summer, feeding in shallow water and kelp beds near Tofino; Parks Canada calls this small group the Pacific Coastal Feeding Group. The southbound migration passes close to shore in October and November.

Humpbacks build through spring and, according to The Whale Centre, many stay through October; Jamie's says sightings are most frequent from June to September. Bigg's (transient) killer whales, which hunt marine mammals, are the orcas seen most often, and they pass through all year. A fin whale is a rare possibility in mid-March. Summer trips also find sea otters, sea lions, harbour seals and bald eagles, The Whale Centre says.

Boats must stay 100 m from gray whales, or 200 m when the whales are resting or with a calf, Parks Canada says. Transport Canada's 2026 order requiring 1,000 m from Southern Resident orcas covers coastal waters south of Campbell River to just north of Ucluelet, including Barkley Sound, plus the whales' critical habitat. Its FAQ does not name Tofino.

Open Pacific swell and the winter hat

Tours can meet open ocean conditions, The Whale Centre warns. It suggests taking seasickness medication beforehand and sitting toward the back of the boat, and there is a pharmacy a block from its office. Its boats have no washrooms. Jamie's covered cruisers do have washrooms, and Tofino Resort + Marina says its covered boat, Blackfish, gives a comfortable ride even in wet weather.

Wear warm layers, such as long trousers under a fleece or sweater, plus rain gear and closed-toe shoes; The Whale Centre advises against sandals. In early spring and late fall it adds a winter hat and gloves. Open boats come with flotation suits: Mustang floater suits on The Whale Centre's Boston Whaler and protective suits on Jamie's Zodiacs. Zodiacs at Jamie's and Tofino Resort + Marina require a height of at least 4 ft 8 in (142 cm) and are not advised in pregnancy or with neck or back problems.

Heated cruisers, 12-seat Zodiacs and open Whalers

The Whale Centre charges CAD 169 per adult, CAD 159 for seniors 65+ and youth 13 to 18, and CAD 139 for children 1 to 12. Taxes, fees, gratuities and a CAD 3 eco conservation fee are extra. Trips last about 2.5 hours on the heated Coastal Cruiser or an open Boston Whaler, with marine naturalists aboard. If no whale is seen, a second trip is free on standby, with no expiry. Departures with fewer than 4 guests may be delayed or cancelled. A private tour for up to 12 is CAD 1,800.

Jamie's Whaling Station, running since 1982, lists covered cruisers from CAD 200.34 and 12-seat Zodiacs from CAD 179.14, both 2.5 to 3 hours. Its covered boats take all ages and have indoor heated seating. If no whale is seen, Jamie's gives a Raincheck Ticket for another tour that never expires, and cancellations more than 48 hours out are refunded in full.

Tofino Resort + Marina carries no more than 12 guests, on the Zodiac Whiteraven or the covered Blackfish, and claims a 95% sighting rate. Its promise is a free raincheck within 12 months, subject to availability. Its fares sit in a collapsed section and were not shown, and it also sells a private Ultimate Adventure with crab trap drops and a picnic option.

Watching from shore

  • Kwisitis Visitor Centre, Wickaninnish Beach. Parks Canada calls the outside deck of this centre, at the south end of Wickaninnish Beach in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, a year-round spot for watching whales. Inside are murals of marine mammals and a large whale tail to pose with.

Before you book

  • Take seasickness medication before the trip and sit toward the back of the boat, The Whale Centre advises; a pharmacy is one block from its office.
  • Pack rain gear, long pants and closed-toe shoes rather than sandals, and add a winter hat and gloves in early spring or late fall.
  • The Whale Centre's boats have no washrooms, so use the facilities before boarding; Jamie's covered cruisers have them on board.
  • Check height before booking a Zodiac: Jamie's requires at least 4 ft 8 in (142 cm) and does not recommend its Zodiacs in pregnancy or with back or neck problems.
  • Getting there. Tofino is at the western end of Highway 4, which links it with Port Alberni and Vancouver Island's east coast. Tofino-Long Beach Airport (YAZ) is 11 km (6.9 mi) southeast of town.
